Dynamic surfel set refinement for high-quality rendering

چکیده
Splatting-based rendering techniques are currently the best choice for efficient high-quality rendering of point-based geometries. However, such techniques are not suitable for large magnification, especially when the object is undersampled. This paper improves the rendering quality of pure splatting techniques using a fast dynamic up-sampling algorithm for point-based geometry. Our algorithm is inspired by interpolatory subdivision surfaces where the geometry is refined iteratively. At each step the refined geometry is that from the previous step enriched by a new set of points. The point insertion procedure uses three operators: a local neighborhood selection operator, a refinement operator (adding new points) and a smoothing operator. Even though our insertion procedure makes the analysis of the limit surface complicated and it does not guarantee its G continuity, it remains very efficient for high-quality real-time point rendering. Indeed, while providing an increased rendering quality, especially for large magnification, our algorithm needs no other preprocessing nor any additional information beyond that used by any splatting technique. This extended version (Real-time point cloud refinement, in: Proceedings of Eurographics Symposium on Point-Based Graphic, 2004, pp. 41.) contains details on creases handling and more comparison to other smoothing operators. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Hardware-Accelerated Geometry Instancing for Surfel and Voxel Rendering of Scanned 4D Media
Range scanners based on camera-projector setups permit capturing dynamic objects at high frame rates at affordable costs, producing a time-varying set of points. This paper establishes a 4D media framework for acquiring, compressing and displaying these point clouds, albeit with more emphasis on the rendering aspects. Displaying these point clouds requires techniques capable of alleviating irre...
متن کاملNormal Mapping for Surfel-Based Rendering
On the one hand normal mapping is a common technique to improve normal interpolation of low tesselated triangle meshes for a realistic lighting. On the other hand today’s graphics hardware allows texturing of view plane aligned point primitives. In this paper we illustrate how to use textured points together with normal mapping to increase surfel splatting quality, especially when using larger ...

Elliptical weighted average (EWA) surface splatting is a technique for high quality rendering of point-sampled 3D objects. EWA surface splatting renders water-tight surfaces of complex point models with high quality, anisotropic texture filtering. In this paper we introduce a new multi-pass approach to perform EWA surface splatting on modern PC graphics hardware, called object space EWA splatti...
متن کاملRendering by surfels
This paper studies a technique for real-time rendering of very large environments in which the geometric primitive is not the usual triangle but the ”surfel” (surface element). A surfel is simply a 3D discrete sample of a surface, associated with a 2D ”sprite” corresponding to its rendering on the screen. The principle of this technique is somewhat similar to ”point sampling rendering” proposed...
